KMOJ

KMOJ/89.9 Radio was founded in 1976 with the mission to “Teach Communities of Color media skills that help reinstate the positive affirmative Black image.” Its programs and activities draw together community members who strive to provide a broadcast medium for a community that has been misrepresented in, misinformed by, and not provided access to mainstream media entities. KMOJ plays a valuable role in training and programming, helping to develop the vision of Twin Cities urban communities by engaging local residents, professional, elected officials, and community activist, etc., in cross-cultural discussions that will engage in a truthful and candid, yet positive approach to discussing and examining Communities of Color from a journalistic perspective.

hamline university

Hamline University was selected as one of the nation’s first Truth, Racial Healing & and Transformation (TRHT) Campus Center sites in August 2017. Through a competitive process, institutions were selected based on their proposals’ ability to create positive narratives about race, identify and examine current realities of race relations in their communities, envision communities without entrenched racial hierarchies, and pinpoint levers for change and key individuals to engage. Hamline’s planning committee is working to develop practice spaces focused on creating new narratives and new relationships while naming and honoring the ongoing pain and trauma wrought by belief in racial hierarchy, structural racism, and white privilege. Hamline’s central location and active connections to community partners will allow for conversations that include racial, social, economic, and religious diversity, and to share, recognize, and learn from others’ expertise and experiences beyond the traditional university context.
